Why Are High-Airflow Exhaust Fans Suitable for Garage Ventilation?

Although natural ventilation is often the most cost-effective method, it greatly impacts the overall building layout and outdoor landscaping. For instance, if a residential complex with a basement area of about 40,000 square meters adopts natural smoke exhaust and natural air supply, the total opening area on the top slab could reach 1,200 square meters. Such large openings not only damage the visual aesthetics of the community but also interfere with fire lanes and building foundations. As a result, natural ventilation is rarely used in practice, and it is mainly suitable for single-level basements rather than multi-level garages.
Mechanical ventilation, on the other hand, is more practical. Commonly, centrifugal or mixed-flow ventilation fans are selected for garage use. Therefore, the demand for high-efficiency, energy-saving models is not significant, and there is no need for variable-frequency fans or dual-unit systems, which would increase cost and occupy additional space. Instead, dual-speed exhaust fans are typically recommended due to two main advantages:
Lower cost and reduced space requirements: Fewer fans are needed, which saves investment and decreases the size of fan rooms.
Meeting both ventilation and smoke exhaust needs: During daily operation, airflow speed is usually kept under 10 m/s. However, during fire emergencies, the airflow speed can be increased up to 20 m/s since noise is less of a concern. Dual-speed fans allow flexible adjustment for both conditions without oversizing ducts, thus avoiding waste of materials and simplifying installation.
In addition, current standards require garage ventilation systems to link with fire protection systems and be controlled by CO detectors during daily operation. However, given the low daily usage of underground garages and the growing popularity of electric vehicles (which emit no CO), the need for extensive CO monitoring and high-frequency air changes is expected to decrease in the future.
Therefore, underground garage ventilation systems in residential areas are generally simple, focusing on functionality and cost-effectiveness rather than complexity. As places where people spend only a short time, garages should prioritize fire safety ventilation while providing adequate daily air circulation.
